“Some years ago — never mind how long precisely — having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world.”

“Yes, as every one knows, meditation and water are wedded for ever.”

“It is not down on any map; true places never are.”

Herman Melville was a whaler and a writer. He departed from New Bedford in January 1841. His boat, the Acushnet, sailed around South America. In July 1842, 18 months after his departure, he deserted the Acushnet in the Marquesas Islands.

Roughly 10 years later, in October of 1852, Melville released Moby-Dick; or, The Whale.
